FRP Pipe Testing Standards: API 15HR vs ISO 14692 vs ASTM — What's the Difference?

The Three Pillars of FRP Pipe Testing

When you open a procurement specification for fiberglass pipes, you’ll typically find references to three standard families: API, ISO, and ASTM. Each serves a different purpose. Understanding the differences can save your project from costly compliance gaps.

API Spec 15HR: The Oilfield Standard

Full name: High-Pressure Fiberglass Line Pipe (4th Edition, 2016)

API 15HR is the definitive standard for high-pressure FRP pipes used in downhole and surface oilfield applications. It covers:

  • Design qualification testing (long-term hydrostatic strength)
  • Production quality control (100% hydrotest at 1.5× rated pressure)
  • Batch sampling requirements (Tg, resin content, axial tensile)
  • Thread and connection testing

Key number: Every single pipe must pass a 100% hydrostatic test before leaving the factory. No sampling — every pipe.

ISO 14692: The Global Framework

Full name: Petroleum and natural gas industries — Glass-reinforced plastics (GRP) piping (2017)

ISO 14692 is broader than API 15HR. It’s a complete lifecycle standard: part 1 (vocabulary/symbols), part 2 (qualification/manufacture), part 3 (system design), part 4 (fabrication/installation).

Where API 15HR focuses on the pipe product, ISO 14692 covers the entire piping system. For procurement teams, ISO 14692-2 is the testing reference — it specifies the qualification tests and production tests required for GRP pipes and fittings.

ASTM: The Material Science Foundation

ASTM standards form the testing methodology backbone. When API 15HR says “determine Tg by DSC”, it’s ASTM D3418 that describes exactly how to run that DSC test. Key ASTM standards for FRP pipe testing:

The Compliance Trap

A common mistake: assuming that passing one standard automatically satisfies another. API 15HR and ISO 14692 have overlapping but not identical requirements. If your contract specifies both, the testing lab must demonstrate compliance with each standard independently.

Always ask the testing lab: “Can you test to API 15HR AND ISO 14692? Show me the test matrix.”
